Songs About Bad Dads (Daddy Issues)

As a former contributor to The A.V. Club I vaguely wish I had contributed to this list of Songs About Bad Dads. Just in time for Father’s Day, of course. Then again, I haven’t heard of most of the tunes on here, so maybe I wouldn’t have been the best writer to tackle this assignment, despite my penchant for all things Daddy Issues.

Cyclops and Cable Have Daddy Issues

This isn’t a song, but nobody has more daddy issues than Scott Summers, aka Cyclops.

There are the obligatory indie-rock bands (The Mountain Goats have two entries) but also some surprises, including, I shit you not, Shaquille O’Neal, who apparently recorded a song Biological Didn’t Bother, which I have to admit is a pretty good title. (By the way, because Amazon truly has everything, if you decide you really love Shaq’s song and want to sing/rap it yourself, you can get a karaoke version. Yes. Seriously. For reals.)

Make your way through the full list (it’s not that long) and you will be rewarded with a tune titled Daddy Wasn’t There from Austin Powers in Goldmember, performed by the fake band Ming Tea. It is, as the A.V. Club writers point out, rather catchy, kinda funny, and just a teeny bit sad to those of us with daddy issues of our own. Here’s the video (Bonus: you get to look at Susanna Hoffs.)

The Austin Powers’ movies are, in their way, filled with daddy issues, particularly Scott and his father Dr. Evil.

Click the link below to check out the full list of Bad Dad Songs from The A.V. Club. Here’s a tip: be a great dad and no one will write one of these about you. And happy father’s day!

Green Beret Wins Crown Royal’s “Your Hero’s Name Here”

So this is cool. This year, Crown Royal‘s “Your Hero’s Name Here” program will honor Green Beret John Wayne Walding by naming a NASCAR race after him. The official title of the event will be Crown Royal Presents John Wayne Walding 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com. The date is July 27. Mark your calendars. Or better yet, go to the race in person. (We went last year. It was fun.)

This exciting news was announced live on TV during the 2014 CMT Music Awards by country music artist Justin Moore (whom we have had the honor of meeting and is a damn nice guy). Walding even got a Gibson guitar. We’re a little jealous of the guitar. You’ll see why in a moment because we have pictures and we’re going to share them with you, along with all of the info about the July 27th race.

How cool is that? Here’s a shot of many of the other folks involved in Crown Royal’s terrific program, and then we’ll show you more pics of the guitar. Read more »

Japanese Woman Divorces Husband Because He Didn’t Like ‘Frozen’

I haven’t seen Frozen yet, but apparently I’d better not dislike it if my wife decides she does. At least not if I want our marriage to last. I say this because a Japanese woman is getting a divorce from her husband because he didn’t like Frozen. Details are below.

This is not a picture from Frozen, the Disney film and pop-culture phenomenon. It’s just a frozen waterfall. But it’s a nice photo, isn’t it?

Amazon.com Mac Software Sale (DaddyDeals)

Amazon.com is having a big ol’ Mac software sale through June 7. There’s a heap of hot steamin’ DaddyDeals, with many a useful program available at a nice price. Check it out.

Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac

The cheesy “Wow!” on the box notwithstanding, Parallels Desktop is a useful piece of Mac software that allows you to run Windows without rebooting. Or to put it another way, you can run Windows in a window on your Mac. Why would you want to do this? Maybe there’s a game only available on Windows and you have a Mac. You can use OSX’s built-in BootCamp, but that requires rebooting your machine. With Parallels you don’t. Here’s a video that shows what I mean:

That’s nice, but what’s the deal? Regular price is $79.95, sale price is $54.99. That’s 31% off. (I didn’t do the math, I’m taking Amazon’s word for it.)

Other bits of bits you might want to scoop up include writing software Scrivener 2 (regular price $45.00, on sale for $23.99, a 47% discount), and popular screenwriting program Final Draft 9 (list price $299.99, on sale for $149.99, which is a full 50% off – half!).

There’s also various Adobe titles, Rosetta Stone language software, and more specific stuff such as Manga Studio 5, which helps you (or your kids, or both) create comics. (Unfortunately for the art-challenged among us, it doesn’t help you draw them.)

So go forth and buy the software! Browse the available titles by clicking the link below. G’wan. You know you want to. No pressure. But, you know. You should click the link. (Click the link.)

Kid Takes Grampa’s Car On Joyride, Stopped By Vigilante Truck (Video)

You know the story. You’ve heard it a thousand times. Some punk kid takes his grampa’s truck on a joyride through a crowded park, needlessly endangering the lives of dozens of people. The kid manages to avoid the police for awhile, until a vigilante truck stops him cold.

DaddyTips Featured Video

What? You say you’ve never heard that story? Me neither. Especially not the “vigilante truck” part. That term reminds us of “Speed Buggy.” Remember that show? It was fun.

Kind of like “Scooby Doo” but the dog is a car. But I digress.

Back to the story: here’s video of the truck stopping the kid. It’s a bit intense.

Click through to Jalopnik for the whole sordid tale.
