No Voices In Music Problem Solved (Tips)

I got a pair of fancy headphones for Father’s Day. Then I have this weird problem — no vocals in music when listening on a laptop. Weird, right? After a few attempts at finding the correct Google phrase (“beats headphones hard to hear lyrics” did it) I found the answer. I thought perhaps other people could be having a similar problem, so I made it today’s tip.

Beats Headphones

Ready? Because this is really dumb.

Pull the headphones out of the jack, and put them in part of the way.

It works. It’s stupid, but it works.

Here’s the original question that was asked:

Hello, When any headphones or speakers are hooked up to my laptop, music plays but voices don’t. This happens when listening to music, watching movies, or watching videos online. Configuration: Windows XP / Firefox 3.6.4

And here is a link to the answer, from a user named razzman.

Yay Internets!

Sopranos for Fathers Day

Last year, HBO recommended an episode of The Sopranos for Fathers Day. It kinda makes sense, as long as you don’t watch it with your kids (depending on how old they are, of course).

The specific episode recommended by HBO is called “College” (Season One, Episode Five).

Sopranos on Father's Day

In it, Tony Soprano (played of course by the late and very great James Gandolfini) takes his daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) on a trip to visit colleges. Since this is The Sopranos, Tony gets sidetracked by some unexpected business.

It’s an early episode of the show — it first aired on February 7, 1999, according to Wikipedia —  and is very good. (Sorry! Forgot to say “spoiler alert.”) It certainly deals with father-daughter issues in a unique way, as did the show as a whole. One of the many great things about The Sopranos was seeing Tony try to be a dad while also conducting his, ahem, legitimate business dealings.

If you want to double-down on Gandolfini for Fathers Day, you can also watch the film Enough Said, which stars Mr. Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. (Catherine Keener is also terrific in a smaller role.) The two have great chemistry, and it’s a nice movie that is also parenting/dad-themed, and it has a fun twist. Here’s the trailer.

There is, of course, an extra note of sadness to the film because it is James Gandolfini’s last starring role.

You can watch The Sopranos and Enough Said via HBO Go and probably HBO Now. (I don’t have the latter and don’t want to say something that isn’t true.)

So if you’re looking for some dad-themed stuff to watch for Father’s Day, here are two solid suggestions… or perhaps we should say… DaddyTips.

Happy Father’s Day to all dads out there!

Crown Royal Gift For Father’s Day

As part of Crown Royal‘s “Your Hero’s Name Here” program (this year named for Green Beret John Wayne Walding), we were offered the chance to give the gift of a bottle of the good stuff to a local hero. We picked Richard, a veteran as well as a proud father. Here’s a picture:

Richard and Crown Royal

To help us out, please retweet this post or this one, which also features a photo of Richard, who will enjoy his Crown Royal responsibly.

Having sampled our share of Crown Royal’s various varieties, we can honestly say that we were glad to give Richard this gift because we know how good the stuff is.

Happy father’s day, Richard! Hope it’s a great one and enjoy the Crown. Reign on!

Songs About Bad Dads (Daddy Issues)

As a former contributor to The A.V. Club I vaguely wish I had contributed to this list of Songs About Bad Dads. Just in time for Father’s Day, of course. Then again, I haven’t heard of most of the tunes on here, so maybe I wouldn’t have been the best writer to tackle this assignment, despite my penchant for all things Daddy Issues.

Cyclops and Cable Have Daddy Issues

This isn’t a song, but nobody has more daddy issues than Scott Summers, aka Cyclops.

There are the obligatory indie-rock bands (The Mountain Goats have two entries) but also some surprises, including, I shit you not, Shaquille O’Neal, who apparently recorded a song Biological Didn’t Bother, which I have to admit is a pretty good title. (By the way, because Amazon truly has everything, if you decide you really love Shaq’s song and want to sing/rap it yourself, you can get a karaoke version. Yes. Seriously. For reals.)

Make your way through the full list (it’s not that long) and you will be rewarded with a tune titled Daddy Wasn’t There from Austin Powers in Goldmember, performed by the fake band Ming Tea. It is, as the A.V. Club writers point out, rather catchy, kinda funny, and just a teeny bit sad to those of us with daddy issues of our own. Here’s the video (Bonus: you get to look at Susanna Hoffs.)

The Austin Powers’ movies are, in their way, filled with daddy issues, particularly Scott and his father Dr. Evil.

Click the link below to check out the full list of Bad Dad Songs from The A.V. Club. Here’s a tip: be a great dad and no one will write one of these about you. And happy father’s day!

Father’s Day Drink Recipes From Bulleit Bourbon and George Dickel

Bulliet Says Happy Fathers Day

Father’s Day comes but once a year, and it’s a great time to have a drink — responsibly, of course.

Here are some Father’s Day drink recipes provided by Bulleit Bourbon and George Dickel, which is a whisky. In the spirit of full disclosure, I have not tried these beverages but I would like to because they sound quite tasty. Also: these beverages contain alcohol. You should know that, but I feel the need to mention it.

These recipes were provided to us by the same folks who sent us on a couple of DaddyTips Road Trips. We like them.

Enough yapping! Here’s the drinks: Read more »
