Tweets Tweets and More Tweets (Tweets)

Tweets. Tweets. Twitter! It’s all about The Twitter. Except when it’s all about The Facebook. Or The Google. Those are The Big Three, I think. Oh! The YouTube. So much for (un)holy trinities.

Anyway, here are some tweets we stumbled across that we decided to share with you.

How this works, parents using Bing to get a free tablet for their child’s classroom, I have no idea. But Microsoft has done stranger things so we figured it was worth sharing.

Nathan Rabin is a funny guy. Also a very good writer. Pick up his books, any of them. They’re good.

Apparently I follow Jimmy Fallon on Twitter. (I badly need to look at my Twitter account. By the way, are you following me @brettsinger? You should. I’m very interesting.) Anyway, here Mr. Fallon tweets a rather kindly worded review of Seth Rogen’s latest film, Neighbors. The tone matches Fallon’s general image, which is that he seems like a nice guy.

And here’s a photo of Jimmy Fallon, because why not.

The Tweets That Ate The Bronx

Eventually I’ll run out of semi-clever titles for collections of tweets that I’ve recently found interesting. For now you’ll have to bear with me as I use stuff like The Tweets That Ate The Bronx. Which would be scary if it actually happened.

Anyway…

Here’s some stuff found on Twitter that we deemed worthy of being included in a DaddyTips Tweet Roundup. Yee-ha! (Get it? Round-up? Like rodeo? Yee-ha? Oh forget it.)

I have a lot more to say about this than I have time to right now, but here’s the simple version. There is nothing wrong with little kids using iPads or other technology. They also need to develop fine motor skills. So for someone to say “hey, they don’t need to know how to tie their shoes as long as they can play Flappy Bird” is pretty stupid. (Note: that is not a direct quote, I’m making a point.)

Orange is the New Black is back soon. Here’s the new trailer. I haven’t quite finished Season 1, but so far it’s one of the best TV shows I’ve ever seen. Not remotely kid-friendly, in case you were wondering. But very very good. Here’s the trailer for Season 2.

The good folks at Babble.com ask, “Could this text message program really prevent teen pregnancy?” Um… maybe? I think the best way to prevent teen pregnancy is sexual education programs. But maybe this way helps too.

Return Of The Son Of Tweets We Like Today

Here are more tweets that we like. At least today. By which we mean that we will probably still like these tweets tomorrow, but tomorrow there will be even MORE tweets.

Actually, there are 500 million tweets tweeted every day, according to this source. That’s a lot of tweeting! Who has time to read all those tweets? How many times can I use a variation of the word tweet in one post? Tweet tweet tweety tweet?

Anyway, here are a few we read today that we liked: Read more »

A Couple Of Tweets We’d Like To Share

Here are some tweets by other tweeters that we’d like to share with you.

First, something parenting-related, because DaddyTips is a parenting site, although we also write a lot of posts about superhero movies and comic books.

Next, a contest about The Muppets tweeted by Z, one of our favorite people.

I have no idea what this is about but I like the title.

And lastly, a tech tip for iPhone users.

And Then There’s This

From Yahoo Sports and Deadspin, video and tweets about a high school basketball game in which there was some fighting on the court. Notable because of the involvement (not in the fighting) of WNBA player Skylar Diggins, who is repped by Jay-Z. (The latter answers my question of “is Jay-Z the agent for anyone other than Robinson Cano?” The answer would appear to be yes.) Diggins was at the game because her jersey was being retired. It’s unclear if this story would be newsworthy without her presence, although we are talking about a high school basketball game that involved after the whistle fighting and there’s video, by which I mean ya never know.

I would explain what happened but (a) I’m not 100% certain and (b) it’s mostly “she tweeted this and then another person tweeted that” and Deadspin did a fairly straightforward wrap up. One thing worth noting is that while the video posted on Yahoo Sports (taken from WSBT-TV) focuses on the punch that knocked a player to the ground, this quote from Deadspin more accurately describes the full incident:

Diggins’s former Washington High School (Ind.) was facing Oregon-Davis (Ind.) when Lexi Minix, a player from Oregon-Davis, shoved a Washington player after the whistle. The Washington player smacked Minix in the face, and Minix fell to the floor.

Emphasis added. Not that it’s OK to hit people, but it does change the story from “she hit her for no reason” to “she hit her when she got shoved after the whistle”, meaning that it wasn’t during the playing of the game.

Also, this:

Oregon-Davis head coach Terry Minix is Lexi’s father, and Washington head coach Maurice Scott is Diggins’ stepfather. (via Yahoo)

As I’ve said before – ah, sports.

Oh, something else worth noting. The twitter accounts of some of the folks involved are listed as “protected”. However, their tweets are embedded on Deadspin’s site. I’m not talking about screenshots, I mean actually embedded directly from Twitter as far as I can tell. My point here is that “protected” doesn’t necessarily mean no one can see your tweets. In general, if you’d prefer not to have the public read your words, tweeting them is a bad idea. But it is interesting that despite the “protected” nature of the account, the tweets can still be embedded. Note: I am not making any accusation(s) against anyone, merely mentioning something I noticed.

Happy New Year! Peace!

Happy Chanukah And a Jewish NFL Player

DaddyTips wishes everyone a Happy Chanukah, and also offers these Tweets from and about a Jewish NFL player, the New England Patriots‘ Julian Edelman. Also some videos showing that the dude can play.

Edelman had a big week for the Pats this past week, accounting for two of the team’s touchdowns. We should have predicted this because we dropped him in our fantasy football league. (Sorry Mr. Edelman, it’s nothing personal. Or maybe we shouldn’t apologize. Any player we drop in fantasy football tends to be successful on the field immediately after said droppage. Not that we think we control the sports universe or anything. It’s just something we’ve noticed.)

Moving away from Edelman’s real football success (and our fantasy football failures), here is a tweet from the Patriots’ wide receiver, who spent some time being charitable recently.

And here are two tweets that Mr. Edelman re-tweeted, including one in which Happy Chanukah wishes are offered.

There aren’t a ton of Jewish NFL players, not because of a conspiracy or anything, there simply aren’t a lot of Jewish football players in general as far as we know.

Edelman, for what it’s worth, is a player that we’ve always liked. Plays well, plays hard, gets the job done. Here is a video of Edelman returning a punt 94 yards for a touchdown back in 2011.

And here is a video of Edelman blocking, delivering a rather serious hit to an opposing player.

Makes me want to watch some football. Oh! Tomorrow is Thanksgiving! Chanukah being so frickin’ early this year just became more OK.

Happy Chanukah from DaddyTips!

Tweets Of Interest (Links)

Here are some tweets that we thought might interest you. Follow the links to find out more.

First up, a program to get boys to read more. My kids read constantly so this isn’t an issue in my house. But reading is fundamental so we’re all for any program that encourages kids, boys or girls, to read. (RIF still exists, by the way, I thought it had disappeared but it hasn’t.) Via @RookieMoms.

Next up, another boy thing: “When should boys use public restrooms alone?” That’s actually a tough question. At some point a boy is really too old to be going into the Ladies’ Room, and if it’s just mom and son out and about, well… I don’t have an answer for this one. As with so much of parenting, it’s like the old man said to the pharmacist – depends. There are so many factors to consider, including the age of the kid, your comfort level, and of course where you happen to be. The bathroom at a small restaurant is very different from one at a multiplex. Via @Mommyfriend and @BabbleEditors.
