Boo Boo Car On My Big Boy Burn (Tips)
I burned my hand. It hurts. I was holding an ice pack on it but that didn’t allow me to type and I have some work to do. I looked in my freezer for a better solution. Voilà. Boo boo car on my big boy burn, held in place with three rubber bands. Since this was a new solution to an old problem, I decided to make it a DaddyTip.
So far it’s working reasonably well. I’m not typing my typical 90-100 words per minute (I type fast, always did) and I’m making more mistakes than usual. But I am able to type using both hands now, sans the burnt finger of course.
I’m not going to include any “related links” because most of them involve Honey Boo Boo and I refuse to involve myself with that sort of thing. Well, unless someone wants to pay me enough money. Then maybe I could get over my… what’s the word? Scruples? Integrity? Whatever.
Burns, by the way, are really annoying and painful. I do not recommend them. The way I got this one was extremely stupid. I was cooking something in the oven, removed the dish from the oven using oven mitts, then removed the oven mitts from my hands and immediately moved to remove the glass top of the extremely hot Corningware dish with my bare hands. Like I said, not too bright. So there’s another tip for you — don’t touch hot things without proper protection. You know. Something most three-year-olds already know.
Draw My Life – Ryan Higa – YouTube
This video by popular YouTuber Ryan Higa (10 million subscribers and counting) surprised me. Not only does it feature no profanity, it’s intelligent, positive, and offers a reasonable message that… I’m hesitant to type these words, but it actually communicates something that might be worth sharing with your children.
I’m not saying “THIS VIDEO WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE DOOD GO GET YOUR OFFSPRINGS NOW NOW NOW”. I’m not even expressing that sentiment in a more coherent and less caps-locky manner. But Mr. Higa has a pleasant style and not only did I watch all seven minutes of his Draw My Life video, I was rather charmed by it.
(Aside: I suppose “Draw My Life” is a YouTube thing. Who knew? Probably lots of people, just not me.)
Without giving anything away (“no spoilers!”), Mr. Higa does indeed draw his life. Much of it deals with his time in school which makes sense because he was born in 1990. (You may pause to feel old now. It’s OK, we’ll wait.) When he mentioned bullying I thought “oh boy, here we go.” But he handles the topic gracefully, far better than anything I’ve seen so far. He manages to say that yes, it sucked, but also doesn’t try to tell people that his lot was as bad as many other people’s. He also points out that he was lucky to have a loving family. (That part is at the beginning so it’s NOT a spoiler.)
Bottom line: I like Ryan Higa’s Draw My Life video. So much content, online and in traditional media, is hurtful and negative. Higa manages to be positive, funny, and entertaining. It’s probably the first time I watched a YouTube video that is entirely original content without drifting away. Give it a look, maybe you’ll like it too.

Leave The Kids At Home And Go See This Movie (Get Out)
Wanted to share this cool movie/party event with you. We can’t go but you should. Or to put it another way — get out. Of the house, that is.
Ain’t Them Bodies Saints is a new film by David Lowery starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck. It opens on August 16, but you can see it a day early on August 15 as part of Rooftop Films “Underground Movies Outdoors” series. You also get to have some fun courtesy of Bulleit Bourbon. Remember, we said to leave the kids at home. (With a babysitter if they’re young. But you knew that.) Also, this isn’t a kiddie movie, as you will see in the trailer.
I don’t know about you, but I think I have something in my eye. No. I’m not crying. OK, maybe a little bit…
I was talking with some friends recently and we all agreed that since becoming parents, we react much more strongly to films that feature children. The trailer for Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (note: I haven’t seen the film) definitely gets me right here. Dads, moms, caregivers, you know what I mean.
Tickets are $18, which includes pre-movie live music and a post-movie after-party courtesy courtesy of Red Stripe and Bulleit Bourbon.

New Android Software Has Parent-Friendly Feature
From TechCrunch, a report about the latest version of Google’s Android software, which includes this parent-friendly feature:
New to Android 4.3: advanced multi-user support, bringing in “restricted profiles”. Restricted profiles lets parents limit what their child’s account can do, for example.
Haven’t looked into the specifics yet but the concept is great. Reporting from the announcement, TechCrunch’s Greg Kumparak writes:
Hugo is running through a demo of the restricted access feature, walking through how you can limit an account to only run certain apps. Apps can even be configured to hide in-app purchase items from kids.
An account that only runs the apps you want your kids to use would be awesome.
According to the article, this feature is part of Android 4.3, which will be installed on the new Nexus 7 Android Tablet announced today by El Goog. For more, including a photo of an enormous tray of bacon, visit TechCrunch.

Health Care Reform, Blue Dogs, and Paul Krugman
It doesn’t look like the House will vote on a health-care bill before their “recess” on Friday. For some reason I think “recess” is an appropriate term for such a childish group of individuals.
Oh no he didn’t! He did not just call members of our government childish!
Ah, but I did. Why? Because one of the main stumbling blocks appears to be the self-described “Blue Dog Democrats.” I fully respect the idea that people will disagree with the President’s plans, even if they are members of the same party. But why do they have to give themselves a name? Do they wear special jackets? Perhaps with little blue doggie patches on them? Anyway, Paul Krugman says that the Blue Dogs “aren’t making any sense” because they want to keep the costs of the proposed health care plan down, but at the same time don’t want to force small business owners to contribute to it. (I’m simplifying a lot. Sorry. I don’t have a NOBEL PRIZE.) Personally, I think Krugman is an extremely bright guy but is wrong about this particular point. It is possible to think one thing that appears to be in opposition to something else. It happens all the time. To me, the real problem is watching potentially life changing legislation get hung up by a bunch of guys who feel the need to call themselves something as stupid as the Blue Dogs.
Is the President’s plan perfect? I have no idea, but I doubt it. Will the Obama Presidency collapse if health care reform isn’t passed by Friday, as Krugman suggests? Nah. In fact, the President himself said “by the end of the year” in his press conference last week. Nobody seemed to notice. So this “before you get to go to recess” deadline is mostly designed to give the House and Senate a kick in the ass.
And you know what? It worked. Republicans are talking seriously about health-care reform. You know the last time that happened? Nixon. (Again, I may be wrong about that. But I don’t think I am.) Not that I want to let anyone off the hook, but you know something? That’s a victory for President Obama. A very real one. Can you tell me the last time we saw a debate about the issue at hand — health care — getting more attention than the politics surrounding the issue? Obviously politics are still very much a part of the storyline. But John McCain just helped the President kill off a plan to build more F-22 fighter planes. John McFuckingCain! The guy who ran against Obama for President! How is that not seen as a major political victory?
I hope they pass a health care plan. I really do. And I hope it’s not done to meet an artificial deadline. But I don’t think it is. If the House leaves without a vote, they’re the ones who will look like they haven’t done their jobs. The President is doing his. It’s time somebody started to notice.
