Cheapest Kindle Even Cheaper Today Only

Amazon’s least expensive Kindle is even cheaper, at least for a little while. As of this moment (Tuesday 2/17/13) you can get 20 bucks off the entry-level Amazon Kindle, today only. It’s right there on the homepage, just click the enormous banner touting the deal and select “Kindle With Special Offers”. The regular price is $69. Right now it’s $49. That is (drum roll please) 20 bucks cheaper. Who says this isn’t the DaddyTips age of easy math?

A book being read

This is not a Kindle. This is a book. I still read regular books but I also read eBooks on a Kindle. Not at the same time, though.

Note that this deal is being touted by Amazon as “today only,” which for us means “Tuesday, December 17, 2013.” What time-zone is the cut off? Who knows. Your mileage may vary. Also note that the 20 dollar discount is only for the lowest-priced model, the one with “Special Offers”, not any other Kindles. I was a little annoyed about this for roughly thirty seconds before I realized (a) that while I prefer my devices not to have advertising, the Special Offers aren’t that big of a deal, and (b) this is such a First World Problem that I can’t allow myself to whine about it.

Bottom line — actual limited time DaddyDeal here. If you want to save 20 bucks on Amazon’s cheapest Kindle, go forth and make your purchase. Avanti!

The Hunger Games Trilogy eBook Only $14.99

This is a hot steaming DaddyDeal right here. The Hunger Games Trilogy, all three books, electronically delivered to your Kindle for only $14.99. That’s change from your (electronic) dollar!

I’ve enjoyed both of The Hunger Games movies so far but the books are way better. It’s not a fair comparison; the books are told from Katniss’ point of view, something that would be impossible on screen. That said, there’s a propulsive nature to the narrative as written on the page, or in this case on your own personal screen… Hmm. I’ll have to re-think that phrase, “on screen”, as it relates to book-to-movie adaptations. An eBook is, of course, on a screen. It’s just not a big movie screen. But you can watch a movie on Kindle Fire, or even a really small screen, like an iPod Classic. (I do this often when riding public transportation; usually I watch The Avengers again. And again. Have I mentioned that I really like The Avengers movie?)

Anyway, whatever. This is becoming a stream of consciousness thing and all I wanted to do was inform you that it is possible to purchase all three of Suzanne Collins’ excellent books for your Kindle at the low price of only $14.99. That’s a damn good deal right there.

Cookie Monster in ‘Lord Of The Crumbs’

Part 2 of The Hobbit movie (or, as I call it, “there and back again and again and again”) hits theaters soon. This Sesame Street ‘Lord of the Rings’ parody starring Cookie Monster as Gobble in ‘Lord of the Crumbs’ is much shorter and probably better. Which one takes more liberties with Tolkein’s source material is debatable.

Tom Hiddleston teaches Cookie Monster about Delayed Gratification

Tom Hiddleston, aka Loki Laufeyson from Thor and The Avengers, made a video for PBS in which he, well, teaches Cookie Monster about the concept of delayed gratification. Really.

Tom Hiddleston teaches Cookie Monster about delayed gratification.

Yes, this is what happens in the video.

It’s not clear that this is a Sesame Street thing since it’s from the PBS YouTube channel. There’s also this weird camera angle switching; every time they do it, the clip changes from color to black and white. Not the typical Sesame Street style. That said, it’s a video of  Tom Hiddleston discussing the concept of self-control with Cookie Monster, and it’s only two minutes long. You’ve wasted more time than that on videos that are far less worthy. Check it out, right here, right now. You are burdened with glorious purpose.

Temporary Reddit Rules For DadJokes

Reddit is kind of the Amazon.com of user-generated content. There’s a category for almost everything. Including (drum roll) dad jokes.

Reddit logo

In the words of Dana Carvey doing Johnny Carson, I did not know that.

Anyway, at the moment there are some rules in place for posting dad jokes.

Starting on the 1st of December and running until the 10th, /r/dadjokes will be self-post only. This 10 day trial is being conducted to measure the overall effect on post quality. We hope to see a reduction in posts that exist purely for karma-gaming, and an increase in posts that represent our favourite dad jokes and stories.

Got that? I think it means the powers that be at Reddit (/r/bosses perhaps?) want people to submit actual jokes/stories about dads rather than links to jokes/stories about dads. I am willing to admit that I could be totally wrong here but I think that’s what is going on.

UPDATE: I read more of the text on the page (I know, crazy, right?) and found this, which offers more of an explanation:

As of this time there are no strict formatting requirements that you must adhere to.
Only self-posts are allowed from Dec. 1 to Dec. 10th
A couple of suggestions to follow:
Leave the punchline out of the title!
Preferred to be a joke your actual father said.
Tag [NSFW] or [NSFL] if ever necessary.

Hit the link below for more details. And if you understand it better than I do, please leave a comment. Or throw money. Either one is fine.

Hi Hungry, it’s Dad. I have an important update for you. : dadjokes. (Reddit)

Get This Deal Before Somebody Notices

It’s Cyber Monday! Deals deals deals! (Conspicuous consumption, OK, not great, but it’s better than “Black Friday All Week!” which is impossible because it can’t even be FRIDAY all week.) This deal has been out there for awhile but we thought today was a good day to tell you about it.

Amazon Autorip - Good Price

Here’s the deal. It’s a little sneaky.

Amazon has this thing called “AutoRip”. You buy a CD, and can then immediately download an MP3 version of the album. Cool stuff. Very handy. Saves you from ripping the thing yourself.

But I don’t want CDs, you say. I’m a purely digital guy/gal/haven’t yet made up my mind.

Ah, sayeth I. Ye of little faith. Would we steer you wrong?

What would you say if I told you you could have the CD AND the MP3 version of the album for less than the price of the MP3 version alone?

Experience Hendrix: The Best Of Jimi Hendrix

Jimi would say, “That’s cool.”

Yes, ladies, gentlemen, and those who have yet to make up their minds. (That’s a line from Kinky Boots, a great Broadway show. Go see it. Buy the soundtrack. Just be.)  Amazon is indeed selling many of your favorite CDs for less than the price of their digital versions, while giving you a digital copy for free.

Free!

Here is the current pricing of Experience Hendrix: The Best Of Jimi Hendrix.

Amazon Autorip - Good Price

Such a deal!

See that?

Poke around Amazon’s music store and see what you find. I recently bought a bunch of James Taylor CDs, and I think all but one of them included a free MP3 download for less than the cost of buying the MP3 download alone.

If you don’t want the CD, you can, give it to someone else or use it as a coaster. You’re saving money even if you never crack open the plastic. I look at it this way — I get the high quality audio of a CD and the immediacy and convenience of MP3 for less than the cost of the MP3 alone. Did I mention that? I think I did.

Enjoy. Here’s a link to that Hendrix album to get you started.

New Essential James Taylor CD – Great Thanksgivukkah Gift

This new James Taylor double CD set is a great Chanukah / Thanksgivukkah gift. Or a gift for one of those other holidays. Christmas, I think they call it? It doesn’t get much attention from the media but I think it’s still sort of a big deal to a few people. You know. Like hockey.

Full disclosure: DaddyTips received a review copy of the new double CD, The Essential James Taylor. That said, receiving the press release announcing the new collection caused us to go on a bit of a JT shopping spree. Seriously. We took a picture. Look.

James Taylor CDs

What can we say? We like James Taylor.

As for the item in question, it happens to be a great collection of JT’s music.

Even if you already own copies of “Never Die Young”, et al, you could do worse than to pop in this well-selected collection of great songs. As for gift giving, get “The Essential James Taylor” is a perfect fit for anyone on your list. (We’re assuming your list consists of people who like great music.)

Some reviewers on Amazon take issue with the “Essential” title, saying that they would have preferred one song over another. This is one of those dopey arguments that occurs with any collection from any musical artist. I happen to have a soft spot for “New Moon Shine“. Was I bothered by the fact that “Essential” doesn’t include the song The Frozen Man?
Lord have mercy, of course not. (See what I did there? If not,  Frozen happens to be a tune that I particularly love; I have fond memories of seeing JT do it live when he was on tour after “New Moon Shine” came out.

But once you start down that road, the one marked “Why Didn’t They Put (Fill In Song Title Here) On This 2 CD Set?”, you’ve kind of gone off the rails.

Bottom line: After listening to both discs, all I can say is that there isn’t a single bad track. How often can you say that about any collection of music?
