Tiny Raspberry Pi Computer Could Create Generation of Tinkerers

The Raspberry Pi is a tiny Linux-based computer that can be customized to do a lot of things. (That is an oversimplification for the sake of blog-posting brevity.) Wired.com reports that the Element 14, the company that makes the adorably named doo-hickey, has now made 500,000 of them.

Since we’re always on the lookout for news about kids and computers, we were intrigued by this quote from Eben Upton, co-founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation:

“The younger generation has demonstrated significant intrigue in learning how to build and program their own computer device. And what has been great to see is the enormous growth in the hobbyist market. I have seen projects from Twittering chickens to home beer-brewing kits being created using the Raspberry Pi and its accessories.”

Now, by “younger generation” Upton probably isn’t referring to little kids, although maybe there are really really really smart little kids who could turn the Raspberry Pi into something nifty. Still, we’re fans of any product that is designed to be futzed with.

Don’t Steal Anything, But Really Don’t Steal Candy From This Store

Theft is, you know, a crime. That said, I once filched a candy bar when I was a very, very young. Single digits young. My grandmother made me go back and pay for it.

If the store I swiped from had this dude on staff, I doubt I would have been so stupid.

You’ll have to go to the link to see the photo. Think Mr. T without the mohawk. Standing in front of a bunch of bins full of candy. That no one will be stealing from anymore.

EXCLUSIVE: Cobble Hill candy shop hires security guards after 40 teens storm the store stealing sweets  – NY Daily News.

Olympic Athlete Goes Independent, Lost 28 Family Members To War

Deadspin has a story about “Independent Olympic Athletes,” of which there are four according to Barry Petchesky’s article. This particular tidbit caught my eye.

But Marial didn’t have a country to represent. He hasn’t obtained U.S. citizenship, and while Sudan offered him the chance to compete for them, he turned them down, citing the 28 family members he lost in the war. “It’s not right for me to do that,” he said. “It’s not right for me to represent the country I refuged from.”

Always good to have perspective.

James Holmes’ Father Goes To Colorado, and Reflections on TV News, TMZ, and Kids Doing Journalism

[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwqFgnl4rMs]

James Holmes, the man accused of shooting dozens of people at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises, will get a visit from his father.

From where did I get this news? TMZ.

Yes, that TMZ. Weird Al did a song parody of Taylor Swift’s ‘You Belong With Me’ called ‘TMZ’ on his recent album Alpocalypse. Whenever I hear “TMZ”, I think of that song. (This is why there’s a Weird Al video at the top of this post.) I certainly don’t think “trenchant news reporting”. So I was surprised to find that this particular TMZ broadcast did a nice job of reporting on the Colorado shooting.

Here are some of my thoughts about the awful event in Colorado, how it was covered in the media, and kids practicing the ancient art of journalism from their bedrooms.  Read more »

Father And Son Make Baseball Bats Together

This is your basic “get misty-eyed” father and son story. This time it’s a dad and his son making baseball bats together. Father and son + baseball + handcrafted wood objects = SentiMental Case. (Get it?)
