It’s Really Hot

In case you haven’t heard, it’s very hot outside. When it gets this hot, I think of The Dirty Sock Funtime Band song Magick Fire, because it includes the lyric “it’s really hot.”

Strangely, I had forgotten another Dirty Socks tune, I’m Hot, despite the fact that the word hot is in the title.

Both of these songs are available on the album Mr. Clown and the Day the Sun Got Wet. Which at the moment sounds like a very good idea. Soaking the sun I mean. It’s probably a bad idea in reality, if it’s even possible to get the sun wet. I don’t know. I’m a writer not a physicist.

I’m rambling.

Did I mention it was really hot?

Smart Diaper With QR code?

CNET via CBS News has a story about a Smart Diaper with a QR code parents can scan when their little ones go wee-wee.

Why?

So that parents can “track changes in a baby’s urine, potentially showing signs of a urinary tract infection, prolonged dehydration, or risk for kidney problems,” according to the CNET/CBS article.

At the moment the Smart Diaper is only a dream; funds are being raised via IndieGoGo. The company behind this potential pee capturing data device is Pixie Scientific. This is an actual quote from their web site:

360 million diapers are changed every day
None of this health information has been used
Until Smart Diapers

They made the the words “smart diapers” blue, not us.

New Language Began With Baby-Talk

Here is a fascinating article in The New York Times about a new language, Light Warlpiri, which is spoken by a relatively small group of Australian Aboriginal people. Everyone who speaks it is younger than 35 years old. And it began with baby-talk.

There are many dying languages in the world. But at least one has recently been born, created by children living in a remote village in northern Australia.
Carmel O’Shannessy, a linguist at the University of Michigan, has been studying the young people’s speech for more than a decade and has concluded that they speak neither a dialect nor the mixture of languages called a creole, but a new language with unique grammatical rules.

UPDATE: I did it. Signed up for the Amazon Comics Newsletter. Received a “code for a Free Download of Superman No. 1” via email, clicked the link, entered the code, and look, on my screen, it’s not a bird, it’s not a plane, it’s a digital Superman comic, which in this case means this particular issue of Superman from 2011. (Just so you know what you’re getting for free.)

Amazon would like you to read comics on a Kindle Fire, but if you don’t have one you can read the issue in a web browser. I think you can read it on the old school Kindle but I’ve never tried and it won’t be in color, of course. (Great Rao, I said “old school Kindle“.) When I checked out, no mention was made of reading Kindle comics using the Kindle app on an Android device. Nor is there any mention made of reading them on an iPhone or iPad.

Anyway, I got my free comic. Or more accurately received a license to read said comic digitally. Was granted a license to read the comic? Something like that. Only Jor-El knows for sure. If you want your freebie, click the link below.

Child Care At San Diego Comic-Con?

Have you ever wanted to go to San Diego Comic Con (officially known as Comic-Con International: San Diego, I think) but didn’t know what to do with your children while you were there? Turns out the Con has child care!
