Original Tron Not Available on DVD?
How is the original Tron not available on DVD? Seriously, how is this possible?
Amazon has used copies going for over a hundred dollars. Or there’s the VHS version — for 40 bucks.
Are you kidding me?
Tron Legacy opens on December 17. Me and the boys are excited to see it. As a completist type of dad, I want them to see the original Tron before they see Tron Legacy.
So I go on Netflix. They don’t have it. It’s in my “saved queue.” Because the DVD is out of print.
Which is stupid. Because if there were ever a time you could sell a boatload of those things, it’s before the sequel hits theaters.
But noooo. No DVD. No streaming. No on-demand. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
Grrrr.

Is An Adults Only Video Game Rating A Good Thing?
From Gamespot, a story about Australia and a desire to create the R18+ rating, which is kind of an X.
In general, I’m supposed to be up in arms about this. U R CENZZURRIN ME NOLULZ THIS IZ BAAAAD D00DD.
But I think I might just agree with the idea. And not only because it’s in Australia where it will have no effect on my life whatsoever.
This isn’t censorship, though. It’s a rating. Video games have become increasingly violent over the years, something I only recently noticed since I started researching games for the new PS3 I got for Chanukah (because my wife loves me). Infamous, a game where you have electric powers and has a plot that is extremely similar to the comic/cartoon Static Shock, features a sequence where you can drain people of their bio-electricity. And watch the writhe in pain. While they die. Cute, right?
This doesn’t mean I think games with graphic violence should be banned. But maybe an adults only rating is a good thing. Is a depiction of graphic killing the same thing as sex? No, and violence rarely gets movie producers an X or NC-17 rating (although it does happen from time to time). Still, I think I’d rather a little bit of a barrier between games that are uber-violent and my kids.

Stay At Home Dad Brian St. Pierre Starting At QB
The intersection of Daddydom and the NFL continues. First we had the Shanahan and Son show in Washington, with Mike Shanahan protecting his son after benching Donovan McNabb (probably — it’s just a theory of mine). Now we get stay at home dad Brian St. Pierre starting at QB for the Carolina Panthers.
That’s right — from diaper duty to NFL starter in about a week. Not bad, right?
It’s not like St. Pierre hasn’t played pro football before. He’s thrown five passes. In eight years. His time carrying clipboards even includes a visit to Super Bowl XLIII as the third-string QB on the Arizona Cardinals.
St. Pierre will be starting at QB for the Carolina Panthers, who are probably the crappiest team in the league right now. Some say head coach John Fox is thumbing his nose at the Panthers higher-ups because he knows he’s going to get fired at the end of the year. See, there’s a rookie QB on the roster that’s been there since the start of the season, and St. Pierre got there, like, a few days ago. The Panthers are so bad this year that it probably doesn’t matter, although could be forgiven for expressing concern for this SAHD‘s safety. Big Daddy Brian is only getting the nod because Panthers rookie QB Jimmy Clausen has a concussion. Football is a dangerous game.
We looked on YouTube for video of St. Pierre throwing one of his five NFL passes, but no dice. If life happens to get longer and we manage to dig one up, we’ll let you know.

Cars is actually my least favorite of the Pixar films, although that’s kind of like choosing the worst Jimi Hendrix song. It’s still better than 99% of the crappy kid movies that arrive every year. Besides, I might as well resign myself to seeing Cars 2 when it comes out since the kids will want to go.
