Craig’s List Sperm Donor Legally Responsible, Kinda
Via Gizmodo, a little story titled This Is Why You Don’t Donate Sperm on Craigslist.
For those who needed a reason…
Three years ago, Angela Bauer and Jennifer Schreiner put out a request for donor on Craigslist and Marotta answered the call. The trio didn’t just leave it at that, however; they all signed a legal document saying that Marotta would have absolutely no rights to (or responsibility for) to the child, despite it being biologically his. But when Schreiner, the only parent listed on the kid’s birth certificate, applied for welfare, the state of Kansas saw fit to put Marotta back on the hook.
According to the state, the agreement the three made in 2009 is moot since the insemination wasn’t done by a professional doctor-type.

Headline Of The Day — Sunscreen Recall
Via Strollerderby at Babble.com:
Upside: Banana Boat sunscreen will help you achieve a deep brown color.
Downside: Banana Boat sunscreen might make you catch fire.
The “catch fire” part requires contact with an open flame. Still. It’s not a desirable outcome when one uses sunscreen.
More from Strollerderby:
In the past year, five people have been burned after using Banana Boat. According to the company, the problem is believed to stem from the spray valve, which somehow results in the lotion taking longer to dry, thereby increasing the risk of flammability.
“If a consumer comes into contact with a flame or spark prior to complete drying of the product on the skin, there is a potential for the product to ignite,” the company said in a statement.
So it’s not quite Spontaneous Human Combustion. But check the recall anyway.

Guess What? Reading Is Good For Your Brain
Turns out that reading is good for your brain. Duh.
But you know something? It’s good when people point this out. In this case it was an item on Huffington Post.
Reading is valuable — not only for entertainment or knowledge value, but for exercising your brain.
I never used to think about that aspect of reading. Then I saw an episode of Boston Public where Denny Crane, the character played by the possibly immortal William Shatner (toupee or no toupee, the guy has a lot of energy for an 81-year-old), visits a doctor to discuss his brain decay. (I’m simplifying.) One of the doctor’s suggestions was that Mr. Crane do more activities that exercise the brain — crossword puzzles, and yes, reading more books. That little moment of television stayed with me and I now make an effort to do crossword puzzles, play word games, and yes, read more books.
But that’s about me, an adult. (An adult who loves superheroes, comic books, and cartoons, but an adult nonetheless.) How about reading and kids?
