Son of Thanos Has Major Daddy Issues

If you are the son of Thanos, it would make sense that you would have some serious Daddy Issues. (Thanos, aka “who is the purple guy at the end of the avengers movie“, still a popular Google Search autocomplete. He also appeared in “Guardians of the Galaxy“, but it wasn’t as cool it could have been. “Guardians” was a great movie, lots of fun, go see it. Thanos could’ve been scarier though. Now back to the point.)

Me and The Avengers movie.

Personally I prefer The Avengers. Have I mentioned that lately?

Here is the description for a new comic book featuring Thane, son of Thanos.

At the close of INFINITY, Thane discovered he was the son of Thanos and that his touch was death.
Now, accompanied by the constantly whispered advice of the Ebony Maw, he wants to discover his father’s history, and his own future.

In other words, Thane (whoever that is) was unaware that (a) he was the son of Thanos, the mad Titan who wants to kill every living being in the universe in order to impress Death because he’s in love with her (yes, really — remember, comic books) and (b) when he touches people they die. (Which I suppose would make him pretty popular with dear old Dad.) Now he knows (a) and (b). That’s just… blech.

So yeah. Like I said. Daddy Issues.

Comics And Robin Williams Collide (Links)

There’s a series of panels in the graphic novel ‘The Watchmen’ in which Rorschach (probably my favorite character in the book) delivers the following ‘joke’:

Man goes to doctor. Says he’s depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, “Treatment is simple. Great clown, Pagliacci, is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up.” Man bursts into tears. Says, “But doctor, I am Pagliacci.”

Here’s the “joke” as portrayed in the movie version of ‘Watchmen’.

Personally I prefer the original, which you can see at ComicBook.com, or right here.

Watchmen Pagliacci

For anyone wondering what the hell this has to do with Robin Williams, here is the explanation from ComicBook.com:

Echoing the series’ central question of “who watches the watchmen?” the joke poses the question of “who makes the clown laugh?” It’s a question many fans find themselves asking with Williams’ passing. So many fans turned to him and his work for cheering up when they were down, but who was there to do the same for him?

If you, or anyone you know, is struggling with depression, remember that the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s is open 24/7, and that the number is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

I appreciate that they put in the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s phone number. If there is anything we can learn from Williams’ untimely demise, it’s that suicide is not a joke and not limited to those whose lives appear to be crappy. Depression is very real and should be taken seriously.

Our condolences to Robin Williams’ family, friends, and loved ones.

This Guardians Of The Galaxy Pic Is Awesome

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters on April 4, 2014 (and apparently the toys and soundtrack listing reveal something major about the plot — I’m not looking, my hands are over my ears, meow meow meow meow, don’t spoil it for me, I’m a massive nerd, etc.), but the next big-ass Marvel superhero movie is Guardians of the Galaxy. This pic is awesome.

Courtesy of @WizardWorld.

Now, who are these funky fresh folks?

Left to right: Gamora (played by Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper; Rocket’s catchphrase in some comics is “Ha! Murdered you!”), Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt, who was also in The Lego Movie), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel; Groot is a big walking tree who occasionally has to get into a flower pot and re-grow — not sure if they’re going to go there in this film), and Drax the Destroyer (played by Dave Bautista, who used to wrestle in the WWE , is 6′ 6″ tall, and is 45 years old).

Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to open on August 1, 2014. The trailer is supposedly coming out this week. That’s good because… well, because I’m a big nerd and I want to see the trailer. Based on the little bit of footage at the end of Thor: The Dark World, this movie looks like it has the potential to be supremely weird in best possible way.

Not to diss Captain America. I’m psyched to see it. (Geek Gold Card, folks. I mean, duh.) But Guardians goes much deeper into the Marvel Comics Universe. Two of the main characters are a talking raccoon and a walking tree, for Stan’s sake. Remember that the conventional wisdom was that Iron Man wasn’t a first-tier character in terms of name recognition among the general public (those without Geek Gold Cards), at least before the movie came out and was a huge hit. Then The Avengers movie made over a billion damn dollars worldwide. This proved (to me at least) that audiences are hungry for good movies featuring superheroes. If Guardians of the Galaxy is good, it will do well. If it’s only so-so, it will likely still do well enough because there are plenty of people like this out there:

English: Valkyrie cosplay for Fan Ex 2011 Came...

That is a photo of a woman dressed up as The Valkyrie. Valkyrie is one of The Defenders, she’s sort of a female Thor, although that’s not entirely fair because she is very much her own character without any relation to the God of Thunder. I’m sorry, did you fall asleep? That’s cool. My point here is that there are enough ticket buyers out there like the cosplayer pictured above to keep Marvel making more movies. As I’ve said before: in the words of Martha Stewart, this is a good thing.

Free Digital Superman Comic From Amazon – UPDATED

Amazon is offering a free Superman Digital Comic when you sign up for the Amazon Comics Newsletter. Click the link below for details. Limited time only, disclaimer disclaimer disclaimer.

UPDATE: I did it. Signed up for the Amazon Comics Newsletter. Received a “code for a Free Download of Superman No. 1” via email, clicked the link, entered the code, and look, on my screen, it’s not a bird, it’s not a plane, it’s a digital Superman comic, which in this case means this particular issue of Superman from 2011. (Just so you know what you’re getting for free.)

Amazon would like you to read comics on a Kindle Fire, but if you don’t have one you can read the issue in a web browser. I think you can read it on the old school Kindle but I’ve never tried and it won’t be in color, of course. (Great Rao, I said “old school Kindle“.) When I checked out, no mention was made of reading Kindle comics using the Kindle app on an Android device. Nor is there any mention made of reading them on an iPhone or iPad.

Anyway, I got my free comic. Or more accurately received a license to read said comic digitally. Was granted a license to read the comic? Something like that. Only Jor-El knows for sure. If you want your freebie, click the link below.

Child Care At San Diego Comic-Con?

Have you ever wanted to go to San Diego Comic Con (officially known as Comic-Con International: San Diego, I think) but didn’t know what to do with your children while you were there? Turns out the Con has child care!

Avengers Family NY ComicCon 2010

This pic is from the NY Comic Con, not San Diego. Just so we’re clear.

I don’t know why I found this bit of news surprising. Maybe I need to get out more. (OK, I definitely need to get out more, but that’s a different issue.) Read more »

Superhero Animation On Demand

As promised, here is a list of Superhero Animation that you can watch on demand. Some notes/comments/caveats:

DaddyTips Featured Video

– Most recent update: April 30, 2013

– All are available via Netflix unless otherwise indicated.

– Titles listed may suddenly become unavailable… or even better, new titles may show up. Such as Batman Beyond and Justice League which are now on Netflix. The greatness of this fact cannot be overstated.

– This page may be updated when new shows are added. I’m also going to make a different page for live action superhero programming. Because I’m cool like that. And I have a Geek Gold Card.

– This may shock some of you, but I have something to say about every single one of these shows. Therefore I will write posts for each entry as time permits. Check back for updates.

Without further ado, here is the list. If you know of anything I missed, leave a comment or contact me directly. This is important stuff, folks. Read more »
