Blogger Gets Death Threats Over Post [One Nation Under 12]

Really.

A Yahoo blogger gets death threats over post about the recent Vanity Fair cover.

No really. At least that’s what the New York Times says. Someone even got arrested, according to the paper of record.

I’m putting it that way for a reason. Because suspicion in this country is at an all-time high.

Anything deemed left wing or “liberal” is considered suspect in terms of its truthfulness. The same is true in reverse.

Still, this appears to be indisputable. What could possibly be written on a blog that would cause someone to get so riled up that they would threaten the life of the writer?

As the Times’ David Carr puts it, “it appears for the time being, the answer to Rodney King’s eternal question — ‘Can’t we all just get along?’ — is, well, not really.” No kidding.

Comment from Steelers-Browns Game

Today in One Nation Under 12 — the childishness of sports fans.
Here is a comment from NFL.com, posted during the Steelers-Browns game on December 10, 2009.
so many breaks in the action ruins the game i wish it wasnt all about the money
Indeed. I’m sure the players all agree with you. They would happily take a pay cut, right?
Being a sports fan changes quite a bit when you get older. When I was a young Yankee fan, I didn’t think about the business of the game. I just liked the sport. Some people would call that “purity” but I would argue it’s closer to immaturity. But when you’re 8 years old, a certain amount of immaturity is acceptable. Desirable even.
Once you get older, less so.

One Nation, Under 12

For years I’ve been saying that we are becoming increasingly immature. In my head I call this “One Nation, Under 12.”

So now I make it official. Whenever I see an example of nationwide immaturity, I’ll post it here. Enjoy.

What do I mean by One Nation, Under 12? 12 means 12 years old, so under that would mean some pretty immature behavior. But what else do you call someone who is presumably an adult and goes to a website and types the following:

mr. poopypants is a fuck tard.

That’s from Stereogum, a music site. And sure, it’s not that big a deal. But why is an adult taking the time to write something like that? Why engage in that conversation?

Not trying to be a bummer. But if Rome is burning, or has burned, it’s better that we know. That way we can get some flame retardant pajamas.
