9 Muppets Kicked Off Sesame Street | Mental Floss

In over four decades, Sesame Street has featured over 1,000 characters. Although we’ll always have mainstays like Big Bird, Elmo, Bert and Ernie, many Muppets have been forgotten or deemed unnecessary. Here are a few Sesame Street residents who were evicted.

Two of these characters were my favorites when I was little. Roosevelt Franklin was so damn cool. And Don Music was hilarious. Hitting his head on the piano.

Why were they banned? Well, head hitting is bad. And Roosevelt Franklin? “Parents wrote to the Children’s Television Workshop to complain that Roosevelt was a negative stereotype of African-American children, citing his rowdy nature and the fact that his classes closely resembled after-school detention.” I mean… OK. But he was so cool! And fun! Ah, hell. It’s not like my childhood was ruined because it didn’t have Roosevelt Franklin in it anymore. But was it really such a negative stereotype? I was too young to know what detention was so even if that part was valid, who cares?

I’m a big Sesame Street fan and I loved watching it with my kids, even if it wasn’t as good as it was when *I* was a kid. Like so many things.

Sesame Street Avengers Parody (DaddyTube)

Apparently today is National Superhero Day. Even if it isn’t (I’ve been fooled before), this Sesame Street Avengers Parody video “The Aveggies- Age of Bon Bon” is quite amusing. Sorry, forget to say Spoiler Alert.

At the risk of spoiling the best jokes… OK, I won’t. But the Sesame Street writers manage to come up with amusing vegetable-themed names for all of the Avengers, and even works in a version of one of my all-time favorite lines (from the first Avengers movie, which this is technically a parody of, rather than Avengers: Age of Ultron). Makes me wish I had a little kid to hang out with so I could watch more Sesame Street.

If that makes you hungry for more (see what I did there?) here is a Sesame Street Superhero Playlist, which begins with none other than Superman. Ah, the good old days.

The Six Dollar Man – Sesame Street Video

How I found this is too complicated/boring to explain. But finding the video of this vintage Sesame Street sketch, The Six Dollar Man, made me smile. Hope it does the same for you.

DaddyTips Featured Video

This is, of course, a parody of The Six Million Dollar Man, a show I also look back upon fondly.

Cookie Monster in ‘Lord Of The Crumbs’

Part 2 of The Hobbit movie (or, as I call it, “there and back again and again and again”) hits theaters soon. This Sesame Street ‘Lord of the Rings’ parody starring Cookie Monster as Gobble in ‘Lord of the Crumbs’ is much shorter and probably better. Which one takes more liberties with Tolkein’s source material is debatable.

Tom Hiddleston teaches Cookie Monster about Delayed Gratification

Tom Hiddleston, aka Loki Laufeyson from Thor and The Avengers, made a video for PBS in which he, well, teaches Cookie Monster about the concept of delayed gratification. Really.

Tom Hiddleston teaches Cookie Monster about delayed gratification.

Yes, this is what happens in the video.

It’s not clear that this is a Sesame Street thing since it’s from the PBS YouTube channel. There’s also this weird camera angle switching; every time they do it, the clip changes from color to black and white. Not the typical Sesame Street style. That said, it’s a video of  Tom Hiddleston discussing the concept of self-control with Cookie Monster, and it’s only two minutes long. You’ve wasted more time than that on videos that are far less worthy. Check it out, right here, right now. You are burdened with glorious purpose.

Ernie Busts Bert’s Chops Again

Another great Bert and Ernie Sesame Street video for your enjoyment. What made me post this one is at the beginning:

Bert: Isn’t he cute?

Ernie: Yeah, sure. Hey, listen…

It’s all in the timing. Trust me.

Cookie Monster Sings ‘Call Me Maybe’ Parody

Cookie Monster, Share It MaybeCarly Rae Jepsen’s song “Call Me Maybe” has apparently taken over the music world for the moment. I didn’t realize this. However, this Sesame Street parody of the tune, “Share It Maybe”, in which Cookie Monster sings about his love of cookies and people who share them with him, is amusing enough to be worth 3 minutes of your time. Watch the video below. Read more »
