Christine Coppa interviews Adrian Grenier [Daddy Issues]

Adrian Grenier Shot in the Dark DVD

Friend of DaddyTips Christine Coppa interviewed Adrian Grenier for Parenting.com. Why are we telling you this? Several reasons.

First of all, we like Christine. Her body of work includes the memoir Rattled!, in which she relates her decision to keep her baby after becoming pregnant unexpectedly, a decision some women actually gave her a hard time about. (I talked to Christine about the book on my radio show; listen to the episode here.)

As for Adrian Grenier’s movie, Shot in the Dark, it’s about a guy growing up without a father. Sunday is Father’s Day. Hello, Daddy Issues!

Christine writes that she was “anxious” about watching the film because of the parallels to her own experience raising her son without a father in his life. “I knew how much it would hit home,” she says on Parenting.com, “and I wasn’t sure if I was willing to go there emotionally—if I could, even.” Ultimately, it sounds like she got a lot out of the movie, and recommends it highly, especially to single parents.

I’m not a single parent, but I was raised by one, as was Grenier. Whenever someone attacks single moms (there are single dads too of course, but commentator ire is typically directed at single moms), I get all worked up. Parenting is difficult, single parenting even more so. The last thing a single parent of either gender needs is some nitwit blaming them for the ills of society.

Back to Shot in the Dark. It sounds like an interesting film, and certainly a subject I can relate to. My concern is that it would bring up way too many of my own daddy issues. Hell, the trailer for Tron Legacy got me choked up. I’m not sure I’m ready to watch a film about a guy who goes looking for his dad, even if he does eventually find him. (You can hear me talk more about this on the Father’s Day edition of Brett Singer Radio.)

For the moment, I’ll stick with reading Christine Coppa’s interview with Adrian Grenier. Check it out at Parenting.com.
