This is a new feature here on DaddyTips. We’ll tell you what comic books we’re picking up this week and give you some comments as well. (Sorry hi-falutin fancy pants people, but they’re not “graphic novels”.)
Batman: Battle For The Cowl: Man-Bat #1 – I’m enjoying these in spite of myself. I mean, they killed Batman. It’s stupid. But I like the characters and the writing has been pretty good.
Flash Rebirth #1: A friend of mine pointed out that it’s been more than 20 years since Barry Allen died in “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” Made me feel old. According to Wikipedia, there was always a loophole that would let a writer bring Barry back, which I guess is what they’re doing. The whole Final Crisis thing has been incomprehensible, but I’m giving this one a chance. It’s only a limited series so the investment isn’t too major if it sucks.
Justice Society Of America Vol 3 #25: Good book. Probably will get less good when Bill Willingham takes over, but I’m mostly saying that because Willingham appears to be a major league dick.
Teen Titans Vol 3 #69 (Deathtrap Prelude)
Teen Titans Vol 3 Annual 2009 #1 (Deathtrap Prelude)
Greatest Hits #6: this was a pleasant surprise. Not the greatest book out there (no pun intended) but a good read. The story is about a guy dealing with his dad’s legacy, so that gets to me on a personal level.
Preacher # 1 Special Edition: never read this but Garth Ennis is always worth a shot. And it’s a dollar.
Jersey Gods #3: Gods land in Jersey mall. Not as good as it should be but promising.
Avengers Invaders #9: Still buying this even though I stopped reading it a few issues ago. Figure I’ll read them all at once eventually. Whenever I say that, I rarely do it. Oh well.
Black Panther Vol 5 #3: Reginald Hudlin does such a great job with this character.
Captain America Comics #1 70th Anniversary Special
Dark Reign Fantastic Four #2 (Dark Reign Tie-In)
Deadpool Vol 3 #9 (Magnum Opus Part 3)(Dark Reign Tie-In): I don’t know why I’ve suddenly gravitated towards Deadpool. I never even knew he existed until I saw him in a video game (X-men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse). This new series has been fun.
Invincible Iron Man #12 (Dark Reign Tie-In)
New Mutants Saga – FREE
Secret Warriors #3 (Dark Reign Tie-In)
War Of Kings #2
Boys #29: The first 6 issues of The Boys were maybe the best stuff I’ve ever read. Then the series dipped a bit, then it came back. It’s still not as good as it was when it started, but hey, I’ve lost most of my hair. We’re none of us perfect.
Billy Batson And The Magic Of SHAZAM #4
Franklin Richards April Fools: These are always fun. Franklin as a doofy kid making trouble works well, and they brought back H.E.R.B.I.E.
Pals N Gals Double Digest #130: My son just discovered Archie, which is nice since there’s a ton of material.
Wolverine Magazine #1: mostly reprints but my son hasn’t read them. It’s a smart move on Marvel’s part. Unlike the Spidey retcon.
X-Men First Class Finals #3: When I first saw this series I thought it wasn’t an all ages book but I was wrong. The writing is solid and the stories are perfect for a younger audience. They’re also self-contained which is nice, since it means I don’t have to buy a bunch of other stuff or spend too much time explaining to my son what’s going on. (Like the Spidey retcon. Which was a bad idea. Did I mention that?)
Big stack this week. I try not to think about it but the fact is, this is too many comics. And I’m not buying everything.
